In dieser Folge des c’t uplink geht es um die Frage, wie gut oder schlecht Linux auf Geräten läuft, die eigentlich nicht dafür gedacht sind.
A colleague gave me an old Macbook Pro 9.2, which was too slow even to open Safari or read emails...
After upgrading the ram from 4 to 16gb, changing the old HDD for a new SSD, installing #Fedora... I made a Zoom call while I had 20 tabs open on Firefox, with Nextcloud, Thunderbird, Telegram and Emacs open in the background.
But the thing that amazed me was the strange sense of #empowerment (?) I felt during the process.
It mostly depends on the life situation. Since COVID, I work from home, and if I travel, I rarely need the performance or could survive for some time without it.
What I like about going with the combo is that I would expect the Mac Studio to outlast the MacBook Pro. I currently use an M1 Pro from 2020. I could easily survive another 2 years, but things like battery and material wear are showing their signs.
A Mac Studio could last maybe for 10 years?
What would you prefer: A Mac Studio (M4 Max) and a MacBook Air (M4 Base model for travelling), or a MacBook Pro with M4 Max? Looking at the pricing, the first option looks cheaper.

Since I bought my #Apple #MacBook Air M3 15" I've come to love the screen, more than anything else. Everything looks bad on my 6-8 years old Dell 24" (2560x1440) monitor. I wan't something as nice and HiDPI as my laptop, but not-Apple.
I see there's an LG 32U990A coming, which looks fantastic, size is right, and is 6K, but no price yet. There's the Dell U3224KBA, but it's more expensive than I am willing to pay, and ugly as sin (the actually bad kind).
What else? 30"-32", 6K.
yeesh. a macbook would actually be fantastic for my long covid brain fog.
(Yes, I did forget what brain fog was. I've been describing it as 'mental fatigue' and 'thinking hurts recently'.)
But as long as I get pre-M1 chips, I should be fine, right?

Electrical safety question -
TLDR: I have a 2006 macbook with no battery - how safe is it to run plugged into mains (with lots of airflow)?

Long ver: I have an old macbook (2006) - battery expired 'pillowed' and so removed and recycled.
Finding a safe replacement battery seems near impossible - If i run macbook on desk with mains power is it likely to overheat in a dangerous way? It's running Snow Leopard but I only want to use Garageband

Better to put another hard drive, if you want to keep your #MacOs installation. Or partition it, and format it, if you don't care about it. Then, boot from DVD or USB stick just pushing "Alt" at startup after power on. Everything is well explained during the installation.
Who's making music on #Linux? Is it realistic to replace a #MacBook with a Linux machine in a recording studio? Does it play nice with external devices? Question:
I have come into possession of a mid-2012 MacBook Air.
4GB RAM and 128GB SSD
Just updating to 10.15 after erasing everything.
What Linux distribution would be best if I want to play with docker, CLI, server.
I would keep it dual boot just so I can restore it to native Mac after playing with it.
I am most familiar with Debian.
Suggestions and thoughts welcome.

Oh fargh... I just realized how daunting this new venture into #Macbook territory is. I have to learn an entirely new operating system as well as an entirely new DAW. I tend to do better at this sort of thing if I have access to an ordered way of doing things, like some sort of course... lessons, etc. There's somebody I'd love to learn from despite the fact I'm stupidly intimidated by them, but I don't think I can afford the nearly $65 an hour price tag.
