The GIMP interface has a dark theme. On the left side of the interface, the selection and painting tools, ... With the brush tool selected, many settings (size, proportions, angle, ...) are available. On the right side of the UI (adaptable to the user's needs and selections), different brush allow to compose images quickly, further down the layers area where the possible superimposed images can be displayed or not. At the top of the screen, the text menus give access to all the functionalities of the tool.

📚️ GIMP is a libre, and multi-platform raster graphics editor for the artistic creation of freehand images (supporting graphic tablets), photo retouching, or creation of animated images, with a wide range of tools (150 filters, format conversion, selection, transformation, filling, cloning, layers, masks, brushes, pencils, airbrush, ...). Its plugin and scripting system allows it to increase its capabilities and automate certain tasks. It is a quality tool continuously improved and put to the test in various projects.

Can anyone reccomend a book or documentary that explains how companies like Google and Microsoft make money from surveillance of users? I understand some of the basics, but would really like a deep understanding. Preferably something aimed at laypeople, rather than people with a tech professional background. Thanks!

📚️ SageMath is a libre and multi-platform software for general and advanced mathematics that aims to become a libre alternative to Magma, Maple, and Mathematica formal compute systems, as well as the MATLAB numerical computation software. For this it relies on other libre software (a hundred, NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib, Sympy, Maxima, GAP, FLINT, R, ...) that it brings together under a unified interface. It covers a wide range of mathematics, including algebra, analysis, number theory, cryptography, etc.

People new to #FreeSoftware assume it's "free as in free beer". #OpenSource misses the point - it's about the freedom (and for so many in India, "open source" = "free as in free beer" ). #Libre is unfamiliar and not self-explanatory.

That's why I call it #FreedomRespecting software. Can we all please switch to that?

@TechConnectify Watched this video through #invidious because #YouTube managed to cripple #FreeTube ( a Free / #libre youtube app which does not have recommendation algorithm ) but the only live invidious instance was able to circumvent the issue and now it sort of works.

If Technology Connections will start a #PeerTube I would be so happy.

I also remember the #libre Serval Project, started by some Aussies who went to Haiti to help following their catastrophic 2010 quake and saw the need for this. The project appears pretty dormant these days (https://servalproject.com) but the Wayback Machine shows it nearer its heyday: https://web.archive.org/web/20140221081959/http://www.servalproject.org/ It was very very cool, but I suspect very strongly rejected by telcos. I'm thinking we might need to force the issue with gov't regulation.

What happened after I deleted Google and disabled their services from my phone?

My only perception is the battery life is much better.

Most people prefer the Google Play Store over manually installing apk's directly from the authors. But I am delighted there are nicer alternatives for all of the convenience that Google captured from open source projects.

It is not easy to accidently turn on Translate in Mastodon. You have to go a layer deep in settings, to set your posting language to the language your mastodon app uses.

It doesn't say it's to turn on "offering to translate" - click here.

It doesn't announce you turned on translate for your readers, your posts.

Mastodon should have an obvious button, "TURN ON Translate" or some such, in a platonic way.
