One hour after voting closed, candidates received email from
#OpenSource Initiative Elections Team — it asks us to sign Board
Agreement (w/ DocuSign) by WED 2025-03-19 17:00 UTC. — “For your name to be considered by the
board as we compute & review the outcomes of… polls”.
*But*, #OSI said at orientation that only seated Directors, not candidates, must sign this agreement.
Can anyone explain why OSI
now asks both winning & losing candidates to sign this urgently?

As time went on, Descent stands out for an even better reason: as one of the earliest games to go #opensource (though not Free Software, technically)
The engines have since been active community projects, providing a lot of quality of life features, optional bug fixes, and working with modern PCs, controllers and network protocols like UDP (as opposed to serial modem and IPX...)

I hope some will buy the disc from GoG, dump its data files, and try it for its 30th!
@atjscreams and Evel are running an #anythingJam on #itchio!!
https://itch.io/jam/glitch-gfx-jam
Its focused on the #OpenSource graphics from the defunct game, Glitch.
It runs April 4-May 4, so join and start planning now!
We're super looking forward to seeing all the different things folks make mostly using the same set of graphics!
Heat Pumps: refrigerators that run both ways.
omg wait. Het Pumps: shoes that denote utter straight-ness.
He Pumps: description of masc person who doth lift.
H Pumps: uhhh, probably a biology or chemistry thing? Like H is Hydrogen, so just one proton (+1 positive charge, +1 atomic mass in the nucleus) with maybe a neutron or two (+0 charge, +1 atomic mass in the nucleus). So an H pump would probably just be a proton pump, like the opposite of what you give people for stomach ulcers? Cuz acid is more protons, giving a stronger overall positive charge.
E Pumps: come on, this is a free trans chick joke. Or maybe like e-girls, or both tbh. Are e-boys a thing? Are e-boys just fem bois in a more cyber punk aesthetic?
Thanks to @nev I found this handy list of #GitHub alternatives! And yes, writers use Git. https://nevillepark.ca/2025/03/13/branching-out-some-github-gitlab-com-alternatives/ #Git #OpenSource
In their release notes, #gitlab has started naming the specific third-party dependencies that cause their security issues... I don't know how I feel about this

The Summit on State #AI Legislation was a rousing success—so grateful to the panelists, moderators, attendees, co-organizers, and staff who made it happen! Two days of great conversations with state legislators, civil society, industry, and the #opensource community. Deets
I will be giving a talk on #Prav this Saturday in #BiharFOSS, organized by @fossunited .For more details, check https://fossunited.org/c/bihar/2025 .
It would be nice to see you there
The rise of Gimp 3
Big kudos to the #Gimp team!
I've just tested out the brand new version 3 and the most wanted feature, non-destructive-editig, just blew my mind!
I haven't realized that now, everything that is based on GEGL is editable, it is just amazing, this goes beyond what I expected as non-destructive-editing.
There are still plenty of room for improvements though , I hope in the future they will add a layer mask for each effect and the opacity channel to determine the amount of the intensity.
Nevertheless this result by itself it is just amazing and superior to other commercials solution even in its infantry!
This will boost my workflow cause now I can modify colors on my images without degrading the original ones and exporting the working file as jpeg-xl, this is already a pro level!
Wow! Thank you so much for adding so many events to // foss.events, making it a reliable source for everyone looking for FOSS events in Europe <3
And if you still miss an event (especially in the still empty areas of UK, France, Italy, Greece, Scandinavia and everything East of Brodnica/ Novi Sad) don't hesitate and add your event now!
The new episode of "This Week in KDE Apps" is out covering among other things a massive amount of improvements to KDE's personal information management suite (email, calendar, contacts, etc.), new levels in KDE's educational activity collection GCompris, fixes for Amarok, and digiKam's just released version 8.6.0.

GIMP 3.0 is finally out with GTK 3 user interface, better UI scaling on HiDPI, Wayland support, non-destructive layer effects, color space management, improved file format support, and usability improvements

#GIMP 3.0 Open-Source Image Editor Is Now Available for Download, Here’s What’s New https://9to5linux.com/gimp-3-0-image-editor-is-now-available-for-download-heres-whats-new
The @eff made a wonderful project called rayhunter. It detects modern cell site simulators (aka stingrays, fake cell towers).
But it doesn't work out of the box on Debian and when I offered a fix (commands to compile a version for Debian), they didn't like it, suggesting that everyone who uses Debian or Ubuntu 22.04 should set up a rust development environment & compile it themselves.
The beauty of #OpenSource is that I don't have to accept that answer. I'm forking it & adding a Debian release
I was trying to figure out what ingredients were in the filling of a cookie, and I thought it would be great if food was open source. Like if the whole recipe was freely available. So I did a quick search to see if anyone is making food products and sharing the detailed recipe. I didn't find examples of that yet, but did find the Open Food Network, https://github.com/openfoodfoundation/openfoodnetwork . They make open source software for connecting food producers to buyers. Cool!

This is absurdly great, but I haven't read a single blog post or news article about it. A fully open source, offline-first alternative to Notion that's a collab between the French and German governments because they want to host documentation securely and on their own terms. THIS is what Europe should be doing. https://docs.numerique.gouv.fr/ #opensource
