#KentUK #RepairCafé celebrates decade of reducing waste

Story by Zac Sherratt - BBC News, March 8, 2025

"A Kent repair café which has become a 'cornerstone of sustainability and community spirit' is celebrating a decade since its launch.

"#FavershamRepairCafé runs on the second Saturday of each month at The Spire Church, and this month's session will be exactly 10 years since it began.

"The café's volunteers have repaired more than 2,800 items, from household appliances to cherished personal belongings.

"Founder and chairman Prof Martin Charter said he and the team were looking forward to reducing waste and strengthening community bonds for years to come.

"Prof Charter began a series of pilot repair cafés in 2014 before officially launching the project the following year.

[...]

"More than 6,000 people have visited the café, all playing their part in diverting an estimated 7.5 tonnes of waste from #landfills and saving roughly 70.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions."

"Tuscaloosa Public Library is hosting its second Repair Cafe on March 22 from noon to 3 p.m.

"Organizers are also hoping to save space in local landfills."

#RepairCafe #Rugby this morning. We're now doing two sessions per month and 3 hours power session. This means we're seeing about 70 items per month coming through the doors. So far we're fixing about 59%, 16% are end of life and the rest have a partial fix or are coming back for more work.

I'm happy with all that.

At today's Levenshulme repair cafe I repaired:

- A 30 year old kitchen drawer. It was as bad as you's expect for a cheap chipboard drawer. Each corner glued, doweled and screwed to hold it together.

- The 1950s/60s coffee table from last month. I refitted the leg brackets, and then helped the client undo their attempted repair to re-glue the top. Their friend suggested self adhesive hook and loop tape.

- A trolley suitcase. The client brought it in with replacement wheels. I managed to grind out the old axles and replace the wheels.

- A saucepan. It had been dropped and was out of round so the lid didn't fit. I carefully bent it back to shape.

I also advised on a handbag clasp - the client will bring it to use at Boothstown Repair Cafe.
And also an umbrella - A main spoke was snapped and not repairable.

I lent out tools and advice to the other repairers, and it was really hectic!
I left the repaired chair, the client didn't return for it. Admin can chase them.

A huge thank you for your generosity at our March repair cafe - you donated £151.37.

We've spent it on:
Café items - £42.
Tools and sprays - £50.
Parking - £17.50.
A PAT course - £38.

We couldn't do this without you. Every penny donated makes a huge difference and enables us to keep supporting the community here in Barry - round of applause for all of you 👏!

Last Saturday was our first #RepairCafe in our new time slot. I was a little concerned that we might not get any custom, but 33 items through the door was a nice number. Not to hectic but enough to keep us busy until about 20mins before the end of the session. Managed to tidy up and leave on time. Result.

At today's repair cafe, I repaired:

- Two folding tables for the hall. - People who don't think about how to fold the legs up just bend and break them into place! So I have to fix them!

- Christmas lights on a wreath - lots of chasing the circuits and cutting out dead bulbs, round and round the wreath, but 80% are working now.

- A bag zip - Squeezed the slider to make it work, but it really needs a new zip.

- A handle on a suitcase - Re glued the rubber grip and hoped. It might come back for replacement.

- A terracotta daisy flower ornament - the petals had broken off. Glued them back as best I could.

I returned the ducks to a very happy client during the session. She didn't believe it could be repaired.

It felt really fast paced and intense today. Maybe that was my mood and general tiredness.
