Anyway, in this essay, titled "The Enshittification of Cory Doctorow", I will explain... etc etc

Shrig 🐌

The key thinking I take away from what he's going for on this one is that "I'm going to build my own theme park with blackjack and hookers" will fix anything in tech because these sorts of people think they know best on everything. Spoilers: They literally don't, and when they do they only serve their own personal cultural norms anyway, fuck the rest right?

The solution to massive social networks that can be taken over, ran by massive cunts, become unfathomably capitalist hellscapes, breeding grounds for fascism blah blah blah, isn't "I'll built my own, and you'll love it because I am right, now I just need 30 million" or whatever, it's "we can work towards creating an ungovernable number of alternatives and seize the means of production"

If these nerds weren't so hell-bent on becoming the God Emperors of My Twitter Alternative and instead actually considered people's social and safety needs and their technically ability while building decentralised social media platforms the whole thing becomes a non-issue very quickly

@Shrigglepuss maybe we should just self-host our own stuff and make self-hosting our own stuff easier and a lot easier to discover and (re)share? Maybe "the web" just isn't a great fit for individuals <.<

@Shrigglepuss IMO we need to get more basic than that: how do you maintain networked/online communication with people you know IRL without using a platform controlled by oligarchs, surveilled, scraped by AI, etc.

Because a lot of people are using these oligarch-owned platforms and services to keep up with friends, family, and neighbors, and that’s a problem if you think about it.

@MisuseCase @Shrigglepuss

This is a good point: a savvy oligarch doesn't capture things that people have the option of walking away from. The extent to which you're dependent on their product is the extent to which they can make money from that product even when you hate them.

This may be why the biggest oligarchs, historically, have controlled land - particularly agricultural land.

@MisuseCase I had asked some of my in-person friends to join fedi and one of them was like, "I'm not into the dark web!" :BlobCat_Laughing: @Shrigglepuss

@Shrigglepuss I like this better than "we have to get All The Influencers and Non-Techies on here NAO!"
