uk climate protests, hypothetical vehicle violence

so like, the middle-class parent driving a fucking gigantic SUV around london who off-the-cuff threatened to "drive through" a protestor who was blocking the road -- that's like the whole point of SUVs, right? the whole appeal is the fantasy that you *could* be able to drive straight through people, if the situation arose, if you wanted to. it's like a mobile weaponised castle for protecting your kids, right? it's a gun, right?

@alex I mean prolly a minority of suv owners do expressly think that but what I am sure from my interactions with people is that (wannabe/potential) owners of SUVs in urban spaces do seem to prefer them because they can intimidate others in the traffic. Nobody really buys a SUV because it's spacious, if you need space there are cars built for that and they are cheaper. And where a SUV makes sense, a pickup inevitably makes way more sense.

@alex TBH the only reason many people *don't* do that is because there is CCTV around and they will be nicked and sent to prison (it does happen fairly regularly in London and Essex with young men at the wheel following disputes - either they use a mid 2000s larger saloon/SUV with automatic transmission (that doesn't stall out like a manual would or automatically notify 999 if it thinks its clouted anything)

London, Essex, actual vehicle violence

@alex when it started in the late 1990s (interlinked with gang violence) it took a while for the Met and CPS to cotton on to it and a lot of incidents were recorded as simple road traffic collisions caused by bad driving and/or suspected drug use rather than deliberate use of vehicles as a weapon (it was also masked by the reality that a lot of people in cities in the 90s weren't particularly safe drivers nor 100% sober or even had licence, insurance etc)
