leftists using neonazi slogans

Clicked on a self-professed marxist leftist's profile on twitter and they literally had "Reject modernity" in their profile bio. Feeling really sorry for this leftist who has such an impoverished political vocabulary they have to make do with cutting up nazi propaganda and trying to rearrange it into something remotely resembling leftism (still ending up with 100% unmodified nazism)

A thing about white people "re-claiming" white supremacist rhetoric is that there's no "re-" on the "re-claiming". It's just white people participating in white supremacy. The notion that this stuff is innocuous enough to joke about is itself a part of white supremacy.

I think one other thing about white leftists "ironically" "stealing" white supremacist memes is that they believe that being a leftist gives them an ironic distance from it (this irony is what the purported humour hinges on). However they're also white, so actually there's no distance.

@alex You nailed it here. How many things are we going to have to say "it's not ours though is it?" about 😠

leftists using neonazi slogans

@alex fuckin aye.

re: leftists using neonazi slogans

@alex There's also efforts made on the part of the alt-reich to sneak their bullshit into the common vernacular. Their "reject modernity" meme is one great example, and another I can think of off the top of my head is "clown world" - for those unaware, it's a syncretistic amalgamation of fascist beliefs under a wrapper of "wow the world sure does seem like it's being run by clowns doesn't it!!!" in order to sneak it under most folks' radar.

re: leftists using neonazi slogans

@LexYeen 💯 yeah. In order for the joke ("saying nazi stuff, despite not being a nazi!!!") to land, it has to be taken for granted that the audience has an above-average literacy in far right memes. Most people - quite reasonably - don't! And with people not-in-the-know as the audience, the person telling the joke is doing the alt-right's job of mixing that dogwhistle shit into common usage.

re: leftists using neonazi slogans

@alex Eeeyup, and that lack of context among the audience is something the assholes spreading fascist shit in the form of so-called comedy rely upon for their ideas to spread.

After all, if enough people think a "joke" is funny, then the ideas propping that "joke" up slowly become normalized by the society in which it spreads.
