Computer repair trick of the trade

If you're repairing someone's laptop and this screen pops up after logging in (normally after a feature update, I think), and you can't get past it because you only have their PIN to log in, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and reboot, and it doesn't appear again for a while x

A similar trick to avoid entering Microsoft Accounts when first installing/resetting Windows 10 Home is to use the email address "example@example.com" and anything as the password, this email address has been blocked and falls back to allowing you to enter details for an offline account x

Just tried this example@example.com trick on the latest Windows 11 Home build and it still works (for now), thank fuck for that 馃帀

When all the tech rags were saying an online account is mandatory during setup you can call them all liars again now but tech journalism is dead anyway so whatever

Computer repair trick of the trade

(Unless Microsoft remove this in the release version tbf, which would be a very Microsoft thing to do)

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss tech rags are all heavily dependent on GAFAM and adtech for funding (even more so than 30 years ago) - you never see then advise to use adblockers either (and many of them actively whinge at you when you use adblocking, others make up for it by getting paid by MS etc to advertise them as part of "editorial")

@vfrmedia @Shrigglepuss one of the reasons why we started tecc.media/ with @cguess

(need to start publishing more there)

Computer repair trick of the trade

@vfrmedia @Shrigglepuss The institution of journalism is rotten and always has been. Don't let their posturing to the contrary fool you.

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss so much of the modern journalism is reprinting press releases that no one even checked that I bet

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss
'possible to avoid with a Very Special Undocumented Trick's is not mutually exclusive with 'mandatory' imo

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss What about disconnecting net access? Does that no longer make the installer show an option to set up a regular 鈥渙ffline鈥 user account in 11?

Computer repair trick of the trade

@shahaan I've not tried in Windows 11 but I presume it works too, I prefer to have it connected though because it checks for critical updates to the setup program before continuing after a network connection is established and ya never know

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss Good point. Well, I鈥檓 sticking with 10 until 2025. Fingers crossed for work not forcing the upgrade.馃馃槵

Computer repair trick of the trade

@shahaan I don't use Windows personally but if I did I would be waiting for the first feature update at least, there's no rush for sure =D

Computer repair trick of the trade

@Shrigglepuss @shahaan When I have installed Windows 10 in VMs, I disconnect the network from the VM during installation then reconnect it after it is installed.
