nerdy PC building tips for tidier budget builds

If you're using a budget PSU and case you can still make everything neat and tidy and lovely looking, here's a few tricks I use in my budget builds I'd like to pass on if that's your thing... 馃

nerdy PC building tips for tidier budget builds

1) There's room above the optical drive to store spare cables in most cases. Put the cables up there before putting the drive in so you can cable them in a bundle easier (make sure you leave the ones you need out ofc). If you're not fitting an optical drive, tie them up there neatly anyway.
In some cases there's a gap above the PSU for storing spare cables.

2) Tie a loose loop in the CPU fan cable to keep it shorter and out of the way

3) If there's no holes in the back to put the front panel connectors etc through if you're smart about it you can pre-route these under the motherboard before fitting the board. Be careful not to have it putting pressure on the motherboard. This is mostly only applicable for retro builds these days but it can be handy for the CPU USB 2 LED control cables still! Put those cables in place before fitting the motherboard.

4) The exhaust fan can be tied up like the photo on this toot, or similar. The trick is to keep the cable behind the fan and only extend it to the motherboard as much as it needs to be I guess!

5) Take your time and have a think about where everything has to go before you get to it, if you're not used to building a lot of PCs take all the extra time you need to undo and re-arrange things as you go, make something to be proud of!

@Shrigglepuss when I read "nerdy PC building tips" I immediately thought of a leaning tower of Piza kind of thing built out of PC cases eventually losing structural integrity and literally tipping over.

@rysiek My back room is nearly there, maybe that's a thread for an other day

@Shrigglepuss Some of the most fun I had when I was building PCs at my last job was in the cheapy cases. They can be a fun challenge routing-wise.
