Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

People grumbling that blaming videogame violence as a bad influence on people are conveniently missing the point that it's the culture and attitudes surrounding videogames that's a big problem rather than the content in the video games.
It's very difficult to argue that a small army of angry white teenagers goading each other on to be progressively more shitty people to fit in, with videogames as the common ground, is a positive thing

Blaming the violent content in the games is a thin attempt at distracting from the real issue that is these violent games are the cross-over point for shitty people and that's where these people are generally found. It's the players and their cliques outside of the content that is more likely the problem and I'm no expert but I doubt much is being done by the industry to reach out to them to calm that down cos capitalism innit

I personally can't stand violent games or the types of people they *generally* attract but they're like flies to shit with it. It's a good net to cast for shit people so I'd love to see the game industry using that influence and access to these people to do more campaigns against hate

But like I wouldn't blame the content of the games directly, that feels like a dangerous and unhelpful distraction to keep people arguing rather than fixing because it's clearly a silly smokescreen

It's a bit like blaming suburban white pubs for inciting hate speech when it's more likely the patrons inside those pubs that prefer to congregate there that are the big problem. These spaces need more anti-hate campaigning for sure. They likely don't incite/promote hate by existing, but they certainly need to be doing more with their access and not turn a blind eye for the sake of profiteering and providing a safe space for bigotry to brew

Tl;dr: companies need to be using the platform they have amongst shitty people for cultural development ahead of their fucking profits and stamp the bigots they're swamped under into the ground instead of letting them hang around like a bad smell

@theoutrider Fucking helllll. I'm very glad I stay away from video games now because that's extremely :yikes:

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss Take 2 also previously wheeled someone out to say that the Homefront sequel - a game about fighting in an armed insurrection against a North Korean occupation of the USA - "isn't trying to make any political statement" and hnnnnnnnnwwrrghhh

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss the problem is fucking endemic is what I'm saying

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@theoutrider Ok, I hadn't realised it was that nasty with regards to the content in some of the games these days if they're letting people play as rancid groups within them too.
Blame should lie on the content in these examples for sure. I hadn't realised some of the developers were *this* complacent with it holy shit

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@theoutrider Instead of "we know our market is dominantly bigots we should do something" they've said "we can make money here", totally irresponsible and fully unforgivable

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss in my town there are way fewer such pubs today (many closed even before the real ale ones and are mourned by few) and pubs are themselves a victim of this intolerance (locals won't even tolerate "white" music genres like pub rock any more) but its hardly the case that Britain has become more tolerant since the late 1990s (if anything its gone backwards)

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss Yeah and the rest of us that just enjoy the games and want to create positive communities and interactions around them really have a tough time dealing with toxic gamer culture. I've had to disable text and voice chat in multiplayer games just to shut myself off from the toxicity. Playing with random other people = high chance of toxic interactions

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@lotus42 I don't even dare touch online games because of all the horrid people out there, it's just not worth it for me at all

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss sounds about right

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss @ashfurrow Hadn't really thought about it from this angle. Thanks for giving me something to ruminate on today!

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss It's also very difficult to me to argue that the same small army wouldn't form around something else if video games were removed.

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Jason_Dodd Yeah, football etc has this problem too and work is being done in that industry as an example (it feels very late and it's early days, but it's happening quite visibly which is important). I feel the videogame industry needs to be doing *a lot* more towards campaigning against hate speech, particularly because of their influence. I'm not proposing removing violence from their games, but far more outreach to the players is needed

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Jason_Dodd Of course the particularly rancid groups will socialise over some other entertainment, but saying "it'll just move on elsewhere if we speak up, we might as-well be the ones profiting from them" is very irresponsible and enabling

Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss I don't have much experience in that world so I don't know how it is. But to the extent they are enabling it, they should take steps to stop.

re: Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@Shrigglepuss

From a western culture point of view, why is violence even a legitimate form of entertainment?

re: Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@ninja @Shrigglepuss i blame the romans

re: Very hot take about videogame violence and influence

@ninja I don't have the answer to that, it's not something I personally understand
